Grow Light for Monstera: Distance, Fenestrations and Safe Acclimation
By the Plantshop.com Editorial Team · Updated · How we research · Report an error
Monsteras stretch and stay small-leaved in weak light. A grow light can supplement a window or run as the main light in a windowless corner. Pair this with our Monstera care guide and buying guide.
Window first, light second
Bright indirect light near an east or filtered south/west window is still ideal. Use a grow light when the plant leans hard, new leaves stay small without splits, or winter daylight collapses. Thai Constellation and other variegated forms usually need more light than all-green plants: see Thai Constellation care.
Distance and schedule
- Start a full-spectrum LED bar or panel about 12-18 in above the top leaves for 12-14 hours.
- Raise the light if new leaves pale or scorch; lower it if internodes stretch.
- Acclimate over 7-10 days: begin farther away or with fewer hours, then increase.

Climbing still matters
Light alone does not replace a pole. Climbing Monsteras make larger, more fenestrated leaves; see NC State Extension notes linked from our care guide.
