Compare by pot size (for example 4 in, 6 in, 10 in), not plant name: the same plant can differ several times in size and price.
Order in mild weather where you can. Shipping in winter cold or summer heat causes most losses; some shops add heat packs or hold orders, so check at checkout.
Open the box the day it arrives, photograph the plant and packaging, and report problems quickly; guarantees usually have a short window and often need photos.
Keep a new plant away from your other plants for about two weeks and check leaf undersides for pests.
Do not repot straight away. Let it settle in bright, indirect light for a couple of weeks first.

Check your USDA hardiness zone first and buy only plants rated for it.
Compare container sizes (for example #1 or #3 gallon) and stated height; a cheap tree is often a much smaller plant.
