Burro's Tail Care Guide
Sedum morganianum
By the Plantshop.com Editorial Team · Updated · How we research · Report an error
Burro's tail (Sedum morganianum) is a trailing succulent with plump, overlapping blue-green leaves. Leaves drop at a touch, so hang it where it will not be brushed. It is not the same as Sedum burrito ('Burrito'), which has shorter, tighter leaves.

Light
Bright light with some direct sun; stretches badly in low light. Rotate the pot every few weeks so growth stays even.
Water
Soak, then wait until the soil is fully dry. Always use a pot with drainage holes and empty the saucer after watering. Plants use far less water in winter.
Humidity and temperature
Humidity: low. Most houseplants prefer 60-80°F (16-27°C) and dislike cold drafts and heating vents.
Soil and feeding
Use a well-draining potting mix with extra grit or perlite. Feed lightly in spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half strength; skip feeding in winter.
Our tip
Use a hanging pot and gritty mix. Handle rarely; fallen leaves can root on dry soil.
Common problems
- Stretching with gaps between leaves: Not enough light.
- Mushy, translucent leaves: Overwatering.
- Mass leaf drop when moved: Normal sensitivity; disturb the stems as little as possible.
Pets
Non-toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA lists Sedum / donkey tail). Check the ASPCA plant list. Check any plant in our Pet-Safe Plant Checker.
